Ben says that working on the protection and recovery of threatened species and ecological communities within a biodiversity hotspot is an absolute privilege and a pleasure.

Growing up on a family farm on the south coast of WA in the small farming community of Jacup, bordering the Fitzgerald River National Park, he developed a strong interest in local flora and environment. That led to a Bachelor of Science (Environmental Management) completed in 2003.

Since 2006 Ben has worked in various roles focused on flora conservation and recovery of threatened species and communities with the Department of Biodiversity Conservation and Attractions (and its predecessors).

This year Ben will speak about the ‘Urban threatened plant communities of Busselton and Dunsborough’.

In his early days, Ben worked on bushland regeneration, weed control and revegetation in the metro area.  In 2006, he moved to the wheatbelt town of Merredin to start a job as flora conservation officer.  Still with the department, he has been in Busselton since 2010 working in various nature conservation roles.
